United Kingdom army chief Nick Carter calls for cash to counter Russian Federation 'threats'

The head of Britain's armed forces says the UK would struggle to match growing Russian military might

Russian Federation could soon overtake the U.K.in terms of military readiness unless the British government makes a significant investment in defense, the head of the army will warn on Monday.

"The time to address these threats is now - we can not afford to sit back", Carter is expected to say, joining a growing chorus of defense officials calling for more military spending.

General Sir Nick Carter will say Theresa May must give more money to the military or Britain will become increasingly vulnerable to the threat of Vladimir Putin.

General Sir Nick Carter made the worrying claim during a speech at the Royal United Services Institute on Monday, adding that the Kremlin had repeatedly and publicly demonstrated its long-range strike capability.

Carter will also warn that in addition to traditional threats posed by foreign armies, Britain had to keep up with increasingly creative forms of disruption from adversaries. "We in the United Kingdom are not immune from that".

Carter will point to Russian Federation, saying it has demonstrated its long-range strike capability on numerous occasions, for example when it fired 26 cruise missiles with a range of 1,500 km into Syria in October 2015.

Day 3 of Larry Nassar's sentencing hearing
I will no longer teach my daughter that. "I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and still suffer from nightmares". More than 80 women and girls have spoken during the hearing, which will resume at 9 a.m.

Monday's address in London was officially sanctioned by the Secretary of Defence Gavin Williamson and comes amid widespread speculation of possible defence cuts to the UK's armed forces.

"We must take notice of what is going on around us or our ability to take action will be massively constrained".

He will also cite massive war games conducted a year ago by the Russian military in Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave between Lithuania and Poland, which have rattled some governments that see them as Moscow testing its ability to wage war against the West. Speed of decision making, speed of deployment and modern capability are essential if we wish to provide realistic deterrence.

Some politicians have called for Britain to increase its defence spending up from the current two per cent to three per cent of gross domestic product.

The review is examining all aspects of national security capabilities, fuelling concerns it will prioritise measures to counter cyber attacks and terrorism rather than major defence projects.

Despite a £36 billion budget, the Ministry of Defence has commitments for new warships, jets and submarines that it can not afford at present.
