Keys blasts into women's quarter-finals

Madison Keys of the United States plays a backhand during her fourth round win against Caroline Garcia of France at the 2018 Australian Open at Melbourne Park.

Coming into the match against Garcia, she had only dropped 14 games - the second fewest among the women through three rounds, just behind Angelique Kerber's 13 games.

Keys could meet Kerber in the quarterfinals.

The big match Saturday had the only two women's major champions left in the tournament playing each other - 2008 Australian victor Maria Sharapova vs. 2016 Melbourne Park champion Angelique Kerber.

She will now play American 17th seed Keys who continued her steady progress through the draw with a 6-3, 6-4 win over unseeded Ana Bogdan.

"I'm really excited because I think I'm really playing well", said Keys of her run to the last eight.

"But she was also getting to a lot of balls and definitely made me play my best tennis". "I'm happy I held my serve in the last game, It's a good sign because my serve is the most important key for me".

U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys is through to the fourth round of the Australian Open after starting Saturday's program on Margaret Court Arena with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ana Bogdan.

With seeds scattered to the wind in the first week, 2015 semi-finalist Keys has looked serene so far and once she broke Bogdan in the eighth game, she always looked the likely victor. Keys unleashed seven aces to counter just one double fault, she had 16 winners and just nine unforced errors, and won five of 10 break points.

In the mens draw, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic also played for spots in the quarterfinals. The third-ranked Dimitrov lost to Kyrgios in the semifinals at the Brisbane International this month. She's yet to drop a set so far this year.

Kyrgios, seeded 17th, missed the chance to end the drought for local men that dates back to Mark Edmondson winning the 1976 Australian Open.

The tattooed sixth seed, looking to win her first major, came through the tight match on Margaret Court Arena against her 29th seeded compatriot 7-6, 7-5 in 1hr 37mins.

"I just do what she tells me", she said, laughing. "I hope Im going to continue and gather three more here".
