Emergency warning issued for two fires in Sydney's Royal National Park

A total fire ban has been declared for the Greater Hunter Central Ranges Southern Ranges Northern Slopes and North Western areas

Firefighters worked through the night to extinguish one of those blazes with the second fire now being brought under control.

More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze on Saturday evening, supported by water bombers and aircraft.

An emergency warning is in place for two out-of-control blazesburning through the Royal National Park in Sydney's south, with thick plumes of smoke being seen across the city.

NSW Police say the fire is being treated as suspicious and investigations are under way.

The fire, which destroyed more than 1800 hectares of land, forced hikers and tourists to evacuate the area.

Private boat owners and surf lifesavers joined efforts to rescue people stranded on beaches as bushfires swept through the park, NSW Rural Fire Service said.

The blaze, which is burning in the Pilliga Forest between Coonabarabran and Narrabri and to the east of Baradine, was downgraded on Sunday evening to advice level.
