Assistant police chief told a recruit to shoot Black people

Assistant police chief told a recruit to shoot Black people

Shaw's comments also referred to sexually assaulting an imaginary black couple, unless, the message said, "Daddy is black...then shoot him".

In an August 31 letter to Prospect, Kentucky Mayor John Evans, O'Connell expressed his "serious concern" about "highly disturbing racist and threatening Facebook messages" that Shaw - who at the time was acting chief for the city of Prospect, a suburban city in the Louisville metropolitan area -had sent to the recruit. Before his resignation in November, Shaw had spent more than 20 years on the police force.

"While it is important to note that all the communications either sent or received by Shaw were sent privately, the city finds the content of the messages to be abhorrent, disgusting and reprehensible", Evans said in a statement. Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Judith McDonald-Burkman ordered the records released despite Shaw's requests to the contrary.

Jefferson County Attorney Mike O'Connell then notified the city's mayor about the messages, according to WLKY, telling the mayor he had "serious concerns" about Shaw.

Louisville Police Chief Steve Conrad said he was "disgusted and appalled" by Shaw's message.

When asked by the recruit what the "right thing to do" would be if he found three teens smoking marijuana (as per an assignment), Shaw wrote back that the recruit should disregard right and wrong. In another unrelated Facebook message, Shaw told the recruit housing projects needed to be leveled.

Last year, WAVE 3 News submitted an open records request for the documents after learning that Shaw had been placed under an internal investigation by the Prospect police chief. Shaw went on to say that "if mom is hot then f*** her. if dad is hot then handcuff him and make him suck my d***".

Weah Takes Office Today As Liberia's President
Liberia's President-elect and former football star George Weah attends his swearing-in ceremony on 22 January 2018 in Monrovia. This will be Liberia's first democratic handover of executive power in decades.

A former assistant police chief allegedly told a Louisville Metro Police recruit to "shoot" black juveniles if he caught them smoking marijuana.

Michael Burns, Shaw's attorney told the Louisville Courier Journal that his client "treated all people fairly and respectfully regardless of their race" throughout his police career.

In the letter to the mayor, O'Connell called Shaw's statements "deeply offensive and racist".

"If black, then shoot", one of the messages read.

"There is no place in police departments for men or women who hold such strongly held prejudices, including recommending shooting people simply due to their race", O'Connell said in his letter.

The messages were originally discovered while Shaw was being investigated for allegedly interfering in a sexual abuse probe. "What has he done to people of color in our community?"
