After decade-long manhunt, accused in 2008 Gujarat blasts arrested

One of India's most wanted terror masterminds, Abdul Subhan Qureshi, has been arrested by a special team of Indian police, officials said on Monday, 22 January.

He was arrested following a brief exchange of fire from Ghazipur in Delhi.

The 2008 Gujarat bombings were a series of 21 bomb blasts that hit Ahmedabad, India, on July 26, 2008, within a span of 70 minutes.

Qureshi, labeled as the Osama Bin Laden of India, is allegedly the top bomb maker of the Indian Mujahideen. "He was again trying to revive Indian Mujahideen", Kushwaha was quoted as saying by ANI.

He had sound technological knowledge, and even passed the Microsoft Certified Software Engineering (MCSC), besides doing Industrial Electronics from Bhartiya Vidyapeeth, Mumbai and hardware networking course.

The Special Cell officer said that Abdul Subhan Qureshi was living with forged documents in Nepal. Fifty-six people were killed and over 200 people were injured in this bomb blast reportedly. He worked for companies in Bangalore and Hyderabad before resigning in 2001 "to work for Allah", according to his resignation letter. Qureshi was later produced and remanded to police custody for 14 days. National Investigation Agency (NIA) had kept 4 lakh reward for providing information about Qureshi which finally led to his arrest. Many television channels said that they had received an e-mail from the terror outfit Indian Mujahideen claiming responsibility for the terror attacks. Qureshi was also booked for organising a three-day physical and arms training camp in Vagamon of Kottayam district.

Qureshi had managed to hoodwink State police forces and security agencies for nearly a decade but ran out of luck after sleuths tracked him down a few days ahead of the 69th Republic Day celebrations.

"Abdul Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer Qureshi...will be brought back to Gujarat for interrogation for his role in the 2008 serial blasts".
