Russia Refuses to Join Deal Banning Nuclear Weapons

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov speaks during a news conference at United Nations headquarters Friday Jan. 19 2018

Although the US president declined to withdraw from the Iran deal, which he has long railed against and formerly promised to "rip up", he gave a four-month deadline to the US Congress and America's main European allies to address what he called the "disastrous flaws" of the deal.

Sergey Lavrov told the Security Council on Thursday in a clear message to President Donald Trump that "we can not for the benefit of political agendas of certain countries abandon a genuine achievement of worldwide diplomacy".

The official said US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson "openly trumpeted" at the meeting that the US and its allies would intensify the pressure campaign against the North Korea by limiting export of oil and industrial products, strengthening naval control and expelling North Korean workers overseas until it stops its nuclear program.

"We need to build on these small signs of hope and expand diplomatic efforts to achieve the peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in the context of regional security".

The Security Council meeting today on the theme of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction: confidence-building measures was convened by Kazakhstan in its capacity as the President of the Security Council for the month of January. "I remain deeply concerned over the growing risk of military confrontation and the unimaginable consequences that would result".

Iran and six world powers, including the U.S., UK, France, Russia, China and Germany, struck the nuclear deal, also called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, on July 14, 2015. This was stated by the Secretary of state Rex Tillerson at a press conference following the meeting in Vancouver on the DPRK issue.

In addition, how can we suggest to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) an option similar to the Iran agreement if it finally fails, he questioned.

By contrast, Kazakhstan's Nazarbayev and China's Wu touted the Iran nuclear deal as a model for future agreements.

"Clearly the failure of the JCPOA, especially as a result of one of the parties ... would be an alarming message for the entire global community architecture, including the prospects for dealing with the nuclear problem on the Korean peninsula", said Lavrov.

"Without such an avenue, we are allowing the use of chemical weapons to take place with impunity", he stressed urging for unity within the Security Council on the issue. The Russian foreign minister also condemned the policies of regime change that are trying to develop in some territories of the Middle East and demanded greater transparency in the political discussion regarding the situation of the area.

"Militants not only are using processed chemicals but they also have their own technological and manufacturing capacities to synthesize full-fledged military toxic substances", he warned.
