Most new cars must be EVs by 2030, government is told

Urgent action needed on clean cars and energy-saving homes climate advisers say

Between 30 and 70 per cent of auto sales in 12 years' time should be ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs), also known as electric, alongside 40 per cent of vans, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) announced as part of its Clean Growth Strategy.

Under the Climate Change Act, the government set a target to significantly reduce United Kingdom greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent compared to levels recorded in 1990.

However, the Climate Change Committee says the strategy does not go far enough.

The Climate Change Committee said that by the end of the next decade, 60% of new cars and vans should be ultra low emissions, most of which will be electric. The Committee published its latest report this week, An independent assessment of the UK's Clean Growth Strategy: From ambition to action, which warns the United Kingdom government that its much-heralded and ambitious Clean Growth Strategy "does not go far enough" and that "Urgent action is needed to flesh out current plans and proposals, and supplement them with additional measures, to meet the UK's legally-binding carbon targets in the 2020s and 2030s".

The report says that the Government's "Road to Zero" strategy, due in 2018, should set out: proposals for incentives for the uptake of ULEVs (e.g. extension of the grants for plug-in vehicles, until the private costs of ownership reach parity with conventional vehicles), and lay out a clear plan for public charging infrastructure.

A spokesman for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy told The Press Association: "The UK has reduced emissions on a per person basis faster than any other G7 nation, and our Clean Growth Strategy is the next ambitious milestone in our work to decarbonise the UK, but we have always said it is only the start of a process. More is also needed on shifting travel demand from passenger cars to lower-emission modes", it added.

Winter storm warning for McDowell until noon
Forecasters say temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for more than 36 hours, until Wednesday afternoon. Meteorologists said motorists should be prepared at times to experience significant reduction in visibility.

The committee called on the government to "take urgent action" if it is to achieve its emission targets in the 2020s and 2030s and eventually reduce emissions at least 80% below 1990s levels by 2050.

Three-fifths of new cars and vans should be electric by 2030 to meet legal targets to cut greenhouse gases, Government climate advisers have said.

That means investing seriously in carbon capture and storage (CCS), the committee advised.

Lord Deben, Chairman of the Committee on Climate Change, said: "The Clean Growth Strategy is ambitious in its aims to build a thriving low-carbon Britain but ambitions alone are not enough".

Three out of five new cars and vans sold in the United Kingdom need to be ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs) by 2030 if the Government is to meet emissions targets, a new report has claimed.

The Committee on Climate Change, which is chaired by Lord Deben a former Conservative Environment Secretary, has questioned the policy measures underpinning the commitment, which has been touted as a potential boost to the UK's air quality.
