WASHINGTON-The Trump administration said Saturday that it would resume accepting renewal applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, bowing for now to a federal court ruling that blocked an effort to end the Obama-era policy.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services posted on its website that the federal agency had begun accepting renewals until "further notice".
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said in a statement on its website that DACA will be "operated on the terms in place before it was rescinded on September 5, 2017".
President Trump held a meeting with lawmakers on Tuesday about passing new legislation to allow the DREAMers to stay in the country, though he has pushed for funding for a wall with Mexico to be part of any immigration policy overhaul.
I'm alive and kicking - Ibrahim El-Zakzaky
The Federal Government has refused to obey the ruling of a Federal High Court which ordered their unconditional release in 2016. The IMN leader and his wife were arrested on December 14, 2015in Zaria following a clampdown on Shiites by the Nigerian Army.
While people who were previously granted deferred action under DACA can request to renew their status, the office said it isn't taking new applications for the DACA program. "Like the president's meeting with congressional leaders demonstrated, there are many different ideas on how we get there, but our members are committed to working with leadership to fix the problem - beginning with a solution that includes DACA, increased border security, and reducing the backlog in our immigration courts". The administration said in September that it was concluding the program.
Wednesday, the president criticized the judge's decision on Twitter.
But last week, a federal judge in San Francisco said the almost 690,000 DACA recipients must retain their work permits and their protection from deportation while a lawsuit moves forward.
Trump promised to end the program during the presidental campaign, and in announcing it was being phased out, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions called it an unconstitutional circumvention of Congress.
