Passenger jet slides off track at Trabzon global airport

A passenger jet carrying 162 people came within metres of plunging into the sea after it skidded off a icy runway as it landed at a Turkish airport

The aircraft, which had taken off from Ankara and was operated by Turkish low-priced carrier Pegasus Airlines, was landing at Trabzon Airport on Turkey's Black Sea coast when the hair-raising accident happened on Saturday night.

The Pegasus Airlines flight had taken off smoothly from the capital Ankara and landed in Trabzon, but skidded off the runway in the northern airport. "There was panic, people shouting, screaming", she told state-run news agency Anadolu.

Flights resumed at the Trabzon International Airport on Sunday, after being temporarily suspended following the incident.

Everyone on board was evacuated safely, provincial governor Yucel Yavuz said. "There has been no loss of life or injury to anyone on-board", Pegasus said in a statement posted on their website, describing the event as a "runway excursion incident".

The cause of the accident is being investigated, officials said.
