Night temp dip below freezing point in Kashmir

No respite from cold in North India Leh records-15 deg Celsius

Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius - down from minus 3.2 - the city had experienced a night before. The night temperature at Srinagar dipped and settled at minus 3.2 degree, against minus 3 degree recorded on Thursday.

The official said Kupwara recorded a low of -5.3 celsius. Kashmir is under the grip of "Chillai-Kalan", the 40-day period of harshest winter when the chances of snowfall are maximum.

After Adampur, Bathinda shivered at a low of 5.6 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal.

Biting winter cold continued its sway on the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday with the weather office giving no indication of any immediate relief.

However, the cold wave tightened its grip again and the minimum temperature dropped over seven degrees last night. "On an average the minimum temperatures rose by up to two notches at many parts of the region", the MeT official said.

He said data for nearby Kargil town was not available.
