Theresa May under pressure to make big shake-up as cabinet reshuffle continues

Theresa May's former communications director has said yesterday's Cabinet reshuffle was a "car-crash" and suggested the Prime Minister "bottled it".

British Prime Minister Theresa May begins the new year with a reshuffle of her top team.

She moves from her previous role as the UK Secretary for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Ms Greening replaced Nicky Morgan as Education Secretary on July 14 2016 after Theresa May won the Conservative Party leadership election and became Prime Minister.

There were other criticisms of Esther McVey's reappointment to Secretary of State for Works and Pensions where she had served under Iain Duncan Smith.

Then, the Northern Ireland secretary James Brokenshire resigned for health reasons, leaving one of the trickiest posts in the cabinet open.

The new education secretary, Damian Hinds, attended a grammar school.

The reshuffle was sparked in part by the resignation of May's ally, Damian Green as the de-facto deputy prime minister, after police who were investigating a separate matter revealed they had found thousands of pornographic images on his computer.

Beyond the hardcore mutineers, the ranks of disgruntled Tories have swollen since this week's reshuffle, joined not only by the ministers who were sacked but by those backbenchers who believed their hour was at hand, only to be overlooked when the time came.

The Press Association reported that Brokenshire is set to undergo major surgery within the next few weeks for a "lesion to his right lung". "Clearly my long-term health and my family are my priorities", he wrote.

No reprieve for India in second test in Pretoria
Either you want to go out there and compete or you don't. "You expect to be battered with pace when you come to South Africa ". India were in the game for 90% of the game, so it was a fantastic contest between two really strong teams.

The most high-profile cabinet ministers all kept their jobs.

According to The Sun's Tom Newton Dunn, Hunt was supposed to move to the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy brief, but refused.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond, Brexit Secretary David Davis, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Amber Rudd all stayed put - preserving a delicate balance of pro- and anti-EU voices that May navigates. Their task is to liaise with MPs in the House of Commons.

"Congratulations to Chris Grayling following his appointment as Conservative Party Chairman", the account tweeted.

However, the announcement was made on Twitter before being deleted shortly afterwards.

His replacement will be Brandon Lewis, who will be assisted by a new deputy chairman, James Cleverly, and a number of vice-chairmen, with various areas of responsibility.

Lewis also took on the role of Minister Without Portfolio.

Tony Blair and Gordon Brown both had 32 per cent of their senior ministerial team privately educated, while 25 per cent of Clement Attlee's post World War Two first cabinet went to private schools.

If this was the prime minister's goal, she failed here too, ignoring some of the party's rising stars such as Tom Tugendhat and Johnny Mercer altogether and moving others from positions where they shone to posts for which they are not obviously qualified.

And a backlash grew after Lewes MP Maria Caulfield was appointed the party's vice-chair for women - despite having led opposition to the decriminalisation of abortion.
