Man shoots mother in the head over broken video-game headset

Man shoots and kills mother over broken video game headset police say

He then raged alone in his room, yelling out in anger Thursday night in Ceres, California.

Investigators say the shooting stemmed from an incident involving a broken video game headset.

According to a police report, Lydia Nicholson went to check on her son in his bedroom after he became upset while playing video games and began shouting.

Nicholson then blamed her for the broken headset and threatened to kill the victim and Nicholson's father.

When police arrived, they found two bullets in the wall and one in the ceiling.

"[She] had so much compassion for people and just wanted to see the best in people at all times", said Autumn Nicholson of her mother.

TRACKING: Flood Watch, Winter Weather Advisory issued for region
It was the deep freeze during the last week of the month that really lowered the average temperature to levels far below normal. In Hancock and Washington counties, the flood watch extends from Friday afternoon though Sunday morning.

Autumn White, the suspect's sister, said, "My mom was a wonderful person who loved her children". A long-time friend of the family elaborated, telling FOX40, "I understand that he would've killed the father too, but the gun jammed".

Lydia both worked and volunteered in local schools. Neighbors say the family is friendly, and are shocked by her murder. "Speechless", said Ron Kutzman, a neighbor of the Nicholson family.

Nicholson shot his mother in the head and fled to a relative's home before he was later arrested during a traffic stop, police said. Officers spotted the auto and arrested Nicholson without incident. During the argument, Nicholson broke his own headset while yelling at his mother, according to police.

"What the detectives are investigating now is what led up to this".

Matthew Nicholson was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail for homicide where he is being held without bail. "Was it the video game or was there something else going on".
