Tamil Nadu reels under transport strike but E Palaniswami tables MLA salary hike bill

Transport workers' unions in Tamil Nadu have made a decision to carry on their indefinite stir notwithstanding the Tamil Nadu government's announcement to release Rs 750 crore towards retirement benefits. The indefinite strike by 17 trade unions including the CITU and DMK-backed Labour Progressive Federation (LPF) entered the seventh day leaving the state crippled.

"The strike will continue until our demands are met".

Advocate General Vijay Narayan, after getting instruction from the government, told the court that the government agrees to the arbitration, but refused to accept other demands.

The striking unions wanted the wage revision to be fixed at 2.57 times - while the state government insisted it be 2.44.

The chief minister announced this during the last assembly session in July. "This will be provided before Pongal festival", he said.

However, as of Wednesday, the strike continued as workers of the state owned transport corporations refuse to withdraw unless he settlement signed by the government with "minority unions" accepting 2.44% wage hike. The strike has affected the passengers across the state.
