Catholic leaders condemn Trump remarks about Haiti, Africa

An article published on the P-G's site yesterday opens by saying, "In bluntly vulgar language, President Donald Trump questioned Thursday why the USA would accept more immigrants from Haiti and "shithole countries" in Africa rather than places like Norway, as he rejected a bipartisan immigration deal, according to people briefed on the extraordinary Oval Office conversation".

The Nordic country, one of the richest in the world by GDP per capita, was past year named the happiest nation on the planet and is known for a cradle-to-grave welfare state funded in part by large reserves of oil and natural gas.

Florida GOP Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said Trump's comments were "completely unacceptable", telling WPLG-TV in Miami that "if that's not racism, I don't know how you can define it". He went on to talk about he witnessed in Haiti, stating the nation's people had "been through more, they've withstood more, they've fought back against more injustice than our President ever has".

Trump on Friday denied using certain "language", but didn't offer more specifics. The largest is El Salvadoran, the second is Honduran and the third is Haitian and when I mentioned that fact to him he said "Haitians?"

The government said Trump should apologize if he made such comments, and summoned the top USA diplomat in the country for an explanation.

Botswana's foreign ministry summoned the USA ambassador in protest and called the comments "highly irresponsible, reprehensible and racist".

U.S. Congressman Steny Hoyer, a Democrat, said "President Trump's comments are racist and a disgrace".
