Catholic leaders condemn Trump remarks about Haiti, Africa

An article published on the P-G's site yesterday opens by saying, "In bluntly vulgar language, President Donald Trump questioned Thursday why the USA would accept more immigrants from Haiti and "shithole countries" in Africa rather than places like Norway, as he rejected a bipartisan immigration deal, according to people briefed on the extraordinary Oval Office conversation".

The Nordic country, one of the richest in the world by GDP per capita, was past year named the happiest nation on the planet and is known for a cradle-to-grave welfare state funded in part by large reserves of oil and natural gas.

Florida GOP Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said Trump's comments were "completely unacceptable", telling WPLG-TV in Miami that "if that's not racism, I don't know how you can define it". She said the fight over immigration reform is turning ugly and seems to counter everything she learned about America in school.

One of the sources who was briefed on the conversation quoted him as saying: "Why do we want all these people from Africa here?"

He went on to talk about he witnessed in Haiti, stating the nation's people had "been through more, they've withstood more, they've fought back against more injustice than our President ever has".

Trump on Friday denied using certain "language", but didn't offer more specifics. The largest is El Salvadoran, the second is Honduran and the third is Haitian and when I mentioned that fact to him he said "Haitians?"

The government said Trump should apologize if he made such comments, and summoned the top USA diplomat in the country for an explanation.

In the U.S., both Republican and Democratic politicians have condemned Trump's remarks, while the United Nations has called Trump's words "racist". "Never said 'take them out'". Obviously, even dysfunctional places have their talented people who could pass muster under a merit-based system, and we should always have a refugee program for people facing persecution in their home countries.

Francois came to Orlando from Haiti in 1983 and says to hear what President Trump said about her country hurt. "We need to continue to work for a bipartisan solution to this problem and not be distracted by name calling and finger pointing".

On CNN, Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland, ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that the President's comments were "dangerous" and "do not represent America".
