Blizzard Has Passed, But Frigid Temperatures Remain Along East Coast

The closest experience we've had to this kind of event was the Blizzard of January 1978, when the pressure plummeted to 28.47 inches Columbus, and a wind gust peaked at 69 miles per hour, as the temperature plunged to near zero and the snow piled up in historic 10- to 25-foot drifts.

At least 22 people in the United States have died in brutal cold weather following a massive winter storm causing the weather to become even more unbearable across the Northeast and Midwest of the country on Saturday.

From northern Florida up through New York City into New England, tens of millions of people will be under wind chill and freeze warnings throughout the day as temperatures in some parts to the north were expected to be -40 F (-40 C), while in parts of the south highs were forecast to be 20 degrees below average.

A 3-foot tidal surge brought on by the nor'easter along the MA coast was the highest recorded in almost a century.

"People think it's nuts before a storm happens, with everyone getting milk, bread, etc." she said, adding with a laugh, "but it's even worse in the days afterward, because they do the same thing but they're a little insane from cabin fever".

The state of MA has seen its fair share of chaos, including the unfortunate record-breaking coastal flooding in Boston, beating out the flood from the Blizzard of 1978.

In Rhode Island, hospitals were treating dozens of storm-related injuries as the region grits through a deep freeze that followed a powerful blizzard.

Brutally cold conditions that have gripped the East Coast of the United States will last most of the weekend, prompting wind chill warnings from Virginia to Vermont. Even more temperate locations won't escape the cold, with the mercury dipping into the single digits in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., over the weekend.

The National Weather Service said on Friday that temperatures in the Berkshire mountains in western MA could seem like a frosty minus 35 degrees, parts of New Hampshire and ME could experience minus 45 and Vermont's mountain regions could feel like minus 50 degrees.

The high winds and frigid temperatures prompted several ski resorts to close some of their lifts. "Nobody wants to be outside", she said.

Many areas along the coast got more than a foot of snow, the Washington Post reported.

Brooklyn resident Zelani Miah, who was walking home from running errands Saturday morning, said he wore lots of them. "Keep warm, make sure you wear hats".
