A traditional drama in the best sense of the word

Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep team-up for the Steven Spielberg-directed The Post

It's probably not hard to make such things exciting. It's quick to jump on the soapbox about press freedom and government accountability - but just as quick to jump off it to keep the drama moving. Papers are shuffled and xeroxed. Both got Golden Globe and other nominations, as did the movie. And it is all completely riveting. At best, the world might know the name of their local newspaper.

The Post crackles with life and energy.

In this image released by 20th Century Fox, Tom Hanks portrays Ben Bradlee, left, and Meryl Streep portrays Katharine Graham in a scene from "The Post". In the movie's swift shorthand, this is why Ellsberg leaked a copy of the Pentagon Papers to The New York Times and, then, to his friend and former colleague at the Post, national editor Ben Bagdikian (Bob Odenkirk, a wry ensemble standout).

Spielberg also said: "I certainly hope that our movie makes people aware of the kind of effort that goes into searching for and seeking the truth".

What they are on fire over together is what turned out to be a signal event in the history of journalism.

The story concerns the Pentagon Papers, a 47-volume classified internal study of the Vietnam War commissioned by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara (Bruce Greenwood). When Nixon calls the New York Times "our enemy" in the movie (which, by the way, is taken from an original audio file recorded at The White House and part of the infamous Nixon-tapes revealed through the Watergate investigation) it immediately pulls one back into the current daily news cycle. "They knew we couldn't win", Ellsberg says here, "and still sent boys to die".

Patriot Financial Group Insurance Agency LLC Raises Holdings in Apple Inc. (AAPL)
On Wednesday, October 4 Armstrong Steven R. sold $273,080 worth of Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) or 22,076 shares. It is positive, as 52 investors sold AAPL shares while 1034 reduced holdings. $42.50M worth of Facebook, Inc.

What gives the film power in the final act isn't just the newspaper's decision to publish the bombshell details of government lies and failures in the war with Vietnam, but the slow and steady steeling of Post Publisher Katherine Graham.

Richard Nixon didn't tweet.

Hanks replied we are now facing "this guerrilla war that is going on against the First Amendment". Few do heroism, small or big, better than Spielberg, and the fact that he fashions them here out of mere words (not headlines), in times such as ours, deserves acknowledgment. (That all happens offscreen.) Something more fundamental is going on here: Bradlee and Graham have to decide whether, in this chilly environment, it's worth taking the risk to publish in the first place. Modern audiences may be taken aback at the easy sexism that Streep's Graham faces in almost every scene, and impressed with the easy grace with which she handles it. The composer and conductor is, as always, the star of the album, with 10 "hot tracks", including "The Presses Roll", "Nixon's Order", "The Oak Room, 1971" and "Two Martini Lunch". More importantly, she would be long gone before the newspaper would pass on to Amazon and Jeff Bezos.

The Post never outright asks the question, "Why should news be profitable?" but it's all over the film anyway.

In their respective years, those films were nominated and often won awards. Spielberg has given us a grand adventure in journalism that is so essential today, when once again the President of the United States is publicly bashing journalists and attempting to smear their reporting as "fake news". With a slew of, The Post is one hell of a way to kick off a career.
