Suter helps Wild down Blackhawks

Chicago Blackhawks' Richard Panik celebrates a goal with teammates Michal Kempny and Connor Murphy during the first period of an NHL hockey game Tuesday Jan. 9 2018 in Ottawa Ontario

A night after scoring four power-play goals in an 8-2 win over Ottawa, the Hawks came up empty on all three power plays - all of them ugly - including an opportunity late in the third period.

Panik's goal preceded a parade of points from Kane, who had four assists during a five-goal second period.

Many will point to head coach Glen Gulutzan's outburst as the reason for the this recent run of success, but the reality is that the Flames had already won back-to-back games at that point.

"From the tape we get and from the angles we saw, I thought it was definitely off-side because these things aren't spoken about lightly because I knew we were down 1-0 playing like that and then they're going to have a power play", Boudreau said.

Jonas Brodin also had a goal for Minnesota (23-17-4), which snapped its two-game skid.

It'll be interesting to see if they can replicate that kind of second-half success this season.

"It's great", Boudreau said of the Wild posting its first road win since Dec.19. "We don't do a good enough job in our defensive zone to limit the chances".

Ottawa Senators goaltender Craig Anderson left gets replaced by Mike Condon during the second period of an NHL hockey game Tuesday Jan. 9 2018 in Ottawa Ontario
Kane notches fives points as Blackhawks bulldoze over Sens

"I don't think in any circumstance that we need more saves".

It was only 42 seconds after Anderson was pulled after giving up four goals on 26 shots and Condon took over that the Senators finally got on the board. "We made mistakes. We made mistakes in key areas and our goaltenders have been solid".

Schmaltz scored his second of the game, picking up Sharp's rebound to beat Condon high and Rutta made it 6-2 with a one-timer. With a 14.4 percent success rate, the Hawks had the third-worst power play in the league going into the game and were 0-for-9 over their last four games. The Wild erased a two-goal deficit in the third period to collect one point in the standings.

"We've talked about it, you guys have talked about it and we have to find a way in our room to have better second periods", Phaneuf said.

Ottawa is also now without defencemen Mark Borowiecki (concussion) and Johnny Oduya (lower body) and centre Nate Thompson (lower body). The latest: Veteran defenseman Brent Seabrook will be a healthy scratch for Tuesday's game in Ottawa.

The Chicago Blackhawks will aim for their third win in a row when they host the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday night at the United Center.
