Skype teams up with Signal to offer encrypted chats

Microsoft has today announced availability of this feature that will make using Skype more secure. The Microsoft-owned service has partnered up with Signal in order to enable the new functionality, which is optional and not default for every chat. The content of these conversations will be hidden in the chat list as well as in notifications to keep the information you share private.

The select the contact to start a Private Conversation.

Private Conversations are also specific to a device. Interestingly, this feature is now unsupported on the UWP version of Skype, though Microsoft has mentioned that support for the UWP client can be expected soon.

Signal has been rated the top messaging app for those who are privacy-conscious; back in 2016, there was evidence of this when the company was unable to provide anything more than the duration of a user's membership after it received a subpoena.

Skype had the potential to be what WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are now.

For instant messages, we use TLS (transport-level security) to encrypt your messages between your Skype client and the chat service in our cloud, or AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) when sent directly between two Skype clients. "You can switch the conversation to any of your devices, but the messages you send and receive will be tied to the device you're using at the time". Private conversations should roll out to non-Insiders in the coming weeks, though it's not clear yet when it will be available in the Skype UWP app.

This means that you will have to enter into the "Private Conversations" mode with whomever you want to have an encrypted conversation with. That said, it's early days and the feature could get better as users start sending in their feedback. Private Conversations can only be between you and one other contact.

Skype's version is called Private Conversations, and these aren't supported for groups.
