Rowley Board of Health Urges More Blood Donations

The critical call for donors is being made, in anticipation for more severe weather.

"Blood can't be stockpiled", DeFrancis said.

Though the weather has been fairly mild in the Northern San Joaquin Valley, bitter cold, snow and ice in other states canceled more than 200 blood drives. Seasonal illnesses have also impacted blood donations by contributing to more than 28,000 fewer donations than were needed in November and December. The U.P. Regional Blood Center is one of the many places asking for donations.

The volunteers helping at the blood drive include the following: Esther Sparks, Jane Noard, Judy Szymovicz, Dawn Haggard, Gina Martin, Lee Ann Hannigan, Kathleen Kocielski, Betty Lou Wisen, Shelly Sines and Mary Kibilka. Because of a heating issue, the most recent Red Cross collection sites temporarily have been moved.

While all blood types are needed, platelets and blood types O negative, B negative and AB are especially needed.

She said you can get information about keeping your home safe at redcross.org/wintersafety.

The Red Cross made a number of urgent calls for blood past year after donations fell short, leaving some regions with less than a one-day supply.

Northern Michigan Hospitals Deal With IV Bag Shortage
He says historically, they give 1,500 IV bags a day, and that's not including basic replacement fluid for patients. A month ago, small saline bags were in the tightest supply.

In addition, donations are on the decline due to the aging population of regular donors.

Every day in Hampton Roads, the American Red Cross needs to collect 350 pints of blood. "It will make some good somewhere, and it will save somebody's life".

Welch said that Type O negative blood was the most needed because it can be transfused to nearly anyone and is commonly used in trauma situations. "We're in a critical need".

The annual Roll Up Your Sleeve blood drive is set for January 15 through January 19.

- Tuesday, Jan. 30 - Notre Dame High School is sponsoring a blood drive at the Immaculate Conception Parish Center in Clarksburg from 8:30 a.m.to 2 p.m.

February 6 - 10:45 a.m. -5 p.m., Moose Lodge, 211 E 12th St.
