Republican Renacci quits governor race to run for Senate

Ohio-Governor-s-Race-Renacci-2

Rep. Jim Renacci (R-OH) will drop out of Ohio's gubernatorial race to run for the Republican nomination in the state's Senate race, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported on Wednesday.

"I now realize after meeting with the White House yesterday I really need to put country first and answer the call to action to serve our nation and come back to try and fight for the Trump agenda and try to get things done in the Senate", Renacci said. While my strong distaste for Washington and the political establishment is as fervent as ever, so too is my commitment to advancing the President's agenda for a stronger and more prosperous America.

Renacci, a Republican from Wadsworth running for governor, has been one of the most discussed names for the Senate race after Republican Treasurer Josh Mandel announced he was dropping out last Friday, shocking OH political observers.

Mr. Renacci leaves the Republican race for governor to Attorney General Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, and their running mates.

His campaign general consultant Mike Biundo said of the Renacci decision, "voters want a true outsider in the race and are exhausted of career politicians who are always interested in their next job".

The congressman is close to Trump and state GOP Chairwoman Jane Timken, which Republicans expect will give him an advantage in the May 8 primary. Wealthy businessman Mike Gibbons is in the race. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and will announce his candidacy on Thursday.

Mike Biundo, a consultant for Gibbons, said Gibbons was committed to the race and had done more to support Trump than any other potential candidate.

"Voters want a true outsider in the race and are exhausted of career politicians who are always interested in their next job".

"Hillbilly Elegy" author J.D. Vance, is another possibility to enter the Senate race.

An investor popular with Republican donors, Vance had talked about a possible run with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of neighboring Kentucky, but McConnell and his allies saw Renacci as more tested.

But some Republicans in the state expressed skepticism of Vance's ability to introduce himself to voters in the state after being away for a while.

Sen. Sherrod Brown raised more than $2.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2017 and entered this year with $9.8 million in the bank, his campaign announced Wednesday. He told The Associated Press on Thursday that was the biggest reason for his change, to serve by helping push Trump's agenda in Washington.

Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales rates the race Leans Democratic.
