Pope calls for worldwide solidarity with migrants and refugees

The Vatican said the Pope "wanted to publish this photo and spread it with a text written on back of the photo 'the fruit of war, '" adding that the "boy's sadness is only expressed through his bitten lips and dripping blood".

On the back of the card, Pope Francis wrote, "The fruit of war", and signed his name.

After the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, Japan's subsequent surrender ended World War II.

"I would like once again to be the voice of these brothers and sisters who ask for a horizon of peace in their future".

The plight of migrants and refugees was the focus of Pope Francis' New Year's prayers when he urged the world to show greater solidarity with them and their quest for peace. For such peace, which is everyone's right, many of them are willing to risk their lives on a journey that in most cases is long and unsafe, and to face hardships and suffering (cf. Message for World Day of Peace 2018, 1).

On Monday, he said: "It is important that there is a commitment from everyone, from civil institutions, and those in education, welfare and church organizations, to ensure a peaceful future for refugees, migrants, everyone".

"Let us not supress hope in their hearts; let us not stifle their expectations of peace!"

He said in his New Year address: "We humans in so many ways ruined and hurt it with works of death, with lies and injustices".

"We desire to and must assume fully, before God, our brothers and creation, our own responsibility".

Monday is also the feast of Mary the Mother of God on the Catholic calendar, and Francis opened his Angelus remarks with reflections on Mary that largely echoed themes of a homily he delivered earlier in the day in St. Peter's Basilica.

It was after a year of mounting worldwide tensions over North Korea's nuclear programme that Pope Francis in November warned that nuclear weapons create a "false sense of security" and serve a "mentality of fear" that affects the entire human race.
