LSU RB Derrius Guice, Likely Early-Round Pick, Declares for NFL Draft

LSU RB Derrius Guice makes NFL Draft decision

Guice is projected to go anywhere from the early to late first round in most mocks thus far. "Having an opportunity to play for this historic university was truly an honor... nothing will ever replace LSU in my heart because you played a big part in raising me from a young boy into becoming a man". He joins Kevin Faulk, Dalton Hilliard, Charles Alexander and Leonard Fournette on that very short list.

Guice got off to a quick start this past season, topping the 100-yard mark in each of the first two games and combining for four touchdowns. He added two more receiving touchdowns - from 20 yards and from 2 yards out - in LSU's 21-17 loss on New Year's Day to Notre Dame in the Citrus Bowl. Guice led the SEC in rushing yards (1,387) in 2016 while tearing off 7.58 yards per carry and reaching the end zone 15 times, showing explosiveness along with an ability to hold up as a workhorse back.

Other returning finalists are safeties John Lynch and Brian Dawkins , running back Edgerrin James and cornerback Everson Walls . Players are eligible to be a Modern-Era finalist for 20 years before they become a Senior finalists.

Guice's sophomore year was one for the record books despite the fact he was technically Fournette's backup. According to Ross Dellenger of The Advocate, Guice holds LSU's career yards-per-carry record (6.5) and has the school's single-game rushing record after torching Texas A&M for 285 yards in 2016.

Guice likely will be the second or third running back selected; Penn State's Saquon Barkley is considered the top back available.
