Homework assignment asked students for 3 'good,' 3 bad reasons for slavery

Our Redeemer Lutheran School

Brown-Berry told Fox 6 Now that the lesson was "offensive and insensitive", later saying that "Not only was my son in an bad position, but also the students who weren't black because it's that sort of mentality of not being able to see from another's perspective, and only seeing through your lens, that's what's unsafe".

Trameka Brown-Berry later said on Facebook that she had spoken to the school principal about the assignment and made five requests: a verbal apology to her son and others in the class, a formal apology sent to parents, that the assignment be removed from current and future curriculum, that teachers communicate with parents when they're broaching sensitive topics, and that the school's staff be trained in cultural competency. "That's insulting", she said. She said she suggested he just write how he felt so he wrote: "I feel there is no good reason for slavery that's why I did not write". She saw he'd already listed bad reasons for slavery - "making them do your chores", splitting up families and "punishing them".

While Brown-Berry is satisfied with the steps she and the school are taking to ensure that something like this never happens again, she doesn't regret sharing her original post.

"I wanted to model for him what it means to voice your opinion and stand up for yourself and stand up for what's right".

Brown-Berry's son, Jerome, refused to list "good" reasons.

School principal Jim Van Dellen says the assignment was meant to spark debate in class but admits it was out of line.

Amazing Video Shows Toyota Prius Surfing California Mudslide
Franklin and his girlfriend jumped in his Prius but before they could make it down Country Club Road the mud caught up with them. But a few hours later, his housemate came downstairs to tell him the neighborhood was being evacuated.

"It was very insensitive for the teacher to do that", Goodson said. "With all of your support I was able to give my child a personal life lesson about how change starts with you".

Brown Berry seemed extremely relieved with the school's response about her concerns.

"The school's principal, Jim Van Dellen, did not release any statement to reporters but did admit that the assignment was totally out of line and "[.] was not, in any way, to have students argue that any slavery is acceptable".

Apparently, the assignment was meant to "spark debate" in the class, but it only sparked controversy.

Fox 6 says it's unclear if the teacher will be disciplined.
