Future Samsung Phones Will Come with FM Radio

Samsung set to finally unlock FM chip in upcoming devices in US Canada

       By John Hoff

Once enabled, FM radio will be available to Samsung users in the U.S. and Canada. At the time, Apple claimed their newer phones didn't contain these chips to begin with and thus could not activate them upon request. That won't be the case for Samsung for much longer. Among sensors, biometric scanners and motion cameras, FM receiver is also present which we have forgot from years now as most phones can't use them.

An unlocked chip and NextRadio's app allows you to listen to over-the-air FM broadcasts on your phone. This uses less data and battery power than connecting to radio apps, though of course, there's less control over what you listen to.

Most of our current smartphones do come with FM tuner, but OEMs end up disabling the same on many models mostly under pressure from carriers.

Japan tracks Chinese frigate near disputed isles
Japan and China have always been at loggerheads over the tiny, uninhabited islands in the East China Sea. Also off Taisho Island, a Chinese Navy frigate reportedly entered the contiguous zone twice on Thursday.

The companies hope that "when cellular coverage is congested or unavailable, the FM Chip will provide life-saving information from local radio stations", echoing concerns that FCC Chairman Pai voiced earlier in 2017. He noted that access to FM radio aided those affected by recent natural disasters in Puerto Rico, Houston and the Florida coast. Approximately 44% of USA smartphones have their FM chips enabled, according to the FCC.

Cupertino in particular came in for criticism for the lack of an FM radio in iPhone models, following a spate of natural disasters in the USA previous year. Apple did note that older iPhones still have the chip.

NextRadio says that "upcoming [Samsung] smartphone models" sold in the United States and Canada will ship with their FM chip unlocked, though some reports suggest that a few Samsung devices already have this functionality.
