Dion Waiters will undergo season-ending surgery on left ankle

Heat guard Dion Waiters will undergo season-ending surgery on his left ankle, reports The Vertical's Shams Charania. He hasn't played since and has missed eight consecutive games.

Waiters has missed the past seven games for the Heat after injuring his ankle against the Dallas Mavericks on December 22. Waiters sought a second opinion in hopes of avoiding the end to his 2017-18 season, but the decision to shut it down has reportedly been reached.

Over 30 appearances this season, Waiters averaged 14.3 points and 3.8 assists while shooting 39.8 percent from the field and 30.6 percent from three after signing a four-year, $52 million contract in July. His 2.3 turnovers per game are a career high.

Ohio State's Keita Bates-Diop is the real deal
Keita Bates-Diop continued his torrid streak with 26 points for Ohio State, hitting 6 of 8 shots from beyond the arc. The Terps were led by Cekovsky, who scored a career-high 18 points, along with five rebounds and two blocks.

But he refused to use his ailing ankle as an excuse for his struggles and said his intention was to return and play the rest of this season once he was healed. Head coach Erik Spoelstra will likely continue to rely on Tyler Johnson, Wayne Ellington and others to fill in for Waiters.

The Heat have won six straight games and moved into fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 24-17 record.
