Trump Faces Major Decision on Iran Nuclear Deal

U.S. President Donald Trump plans to extend waivers on sanctions against Iran that were required as part of a 2015 nuclear deal as Congress weighs legislation meant to fix what the administration considers flaws with the agreement, according to an administration official familiar with the matter.

The Associated Press and Reuters on January 10 cited US officials and others familiar with administration policy as saying that Trump and key advisers will meet on January 11 to finalize the decision, which will be revealed on January 12.

But Trump, who has previously vowed to scrap the nuclear pact, is privately expressing reluctance to heed the advisers, the official said. They cautioned Trump could still reject the recommendation of his top security aides.

The U.S. State Department said on Tuesday that the Trump administration was expected to decide on extending the sanctions waiver on Friday.

Neither Donald Trump, his United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, nor Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu care one iota for the welfare of one Iranian man, woman, or child, just the Bush and Obama administrations cared nothing for the welfare of the Iraqi and Libyan people in 2003 and 2011.

The US alone can not actually terminate the accord, which lifted sanctions that had choked Iran's economy in exchange for Tehran rolling back its nuclear program.

The other signatories to the accord - Britain, China, Germany, France, and Russian Federation - and the European Union continue to support the agreement.

Iran warned the United States of a "harsh response" if it withdraws from the 2015 nuclear deal. It has said it will stick to the accord as long as the other signatories respect it, but will "shred" the deal if Washington pulls out.

One diplomat told Reuters the aim is to "send a message to Washington that Iran is complying and that it is better to have the nuclear agreement than to isolate Tehran".

He stressed the need for Washington to remain committed to its commitments based on the nuclear deal, saying that "certainly, the United States' possible withdrawal or any irrational behavior towards it [the deal] will meet Iran's proper and heavy behavior and if they make a blatant mistake in this regard, it will certainly lead to the USA administration's regret".

"You either waive the sanctions or you don't and if you don't you're in breach of the JCPOA", the official said.

With a 48-hour deadline looming, President Trump is making moves on the Iran Nuclear Deal.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker has been working on amending a US law to include "trigger points" that if crossed by Iran would automatically bring back USA sanctions.
