Mother Of H&M Model Tells Everyone To 'Get Over It

On Monday, H&M sparked outrage across the web when an image of a child wearing a sweatshirt reading "Coolest Monkey in the Jungle" surfaced on their site. "Stop crying wolf all the time", she added, taking aim at those high-profile figures like LeBron James, Niecy Nash, Questlove, Diddy and more who condemned H&M for dressing the young boy in the offending hoodie.

But Ms Mango urged critics to "get over it" and "stop crying wolf".

Strangely enough, Mango said that some of the people criticizing her for allowing her son to model the hoodie used racial slurs in their messages.

Yet, whilst there are big names up in arms against H&M this week, Twitter users are divided on the subject; with some declaring that those viewing the photo as racist are the ones associating the black child with the monkey imagery, not the actual use of the model by H&M themselves.

Mango's uncle, Clay Onyango, told Gulf News that his family met with representatives for the store following the Internet-wide backlash. We, at least in the United Kingdom, refer to children as cheeky monkeys on an everyday basis, the mistake to me seems an honest one; and their swift apology genuinely heartfelt. We've not really decided what we want - we want to hear from them [H&M] first, then we can go out with a press release.

"Maybe it's just one of those mistakes that one makes". These offenses are more about the makeup of the rooms where they happen, than the items they produce. We want to live in a society where we do not see people as one race or another; we want to be colour-blind, so to speak.

National Basketball Association star LeBron James, rapper Diddy and other artists have also responded with outrage to the image.

"We are deeply sorry that the picture was taken", H&M said.

H&M issued a statement to InStyle shortly after the star's tweet was posted, writing, "We completely understand and agree with his reaction to the image".

"We as African Americans will always have to break barriers, prove people wrong and work even harder to prove we belong but guess what, that's what we love because the benefits at the end of the road are so attractive!"
