Facebook Testing Local News & Events Section in its App

Facebook testing local news section on its platform

Social media platform, Facebook, on Wednesday announced its new feature aimed at disseminating local news to its users.

The social media company, Facebook is testing a new section, "Today In". To make sure that the stories are relevant and authentic, Facebook will only source links from local publishers that have been manually vetted by the News Partnership team first. The initial test markets are New Orleans, Louisiana; Olympia, Washington; Billings, Montana; Binghamton, New York; Peoria, Illinois and Little Rock, Arkansas. The people in the six test cities are to be alerted by Facebook that the new feature has been brought in already, but after that, Facebook "Today In" will feature in the menu (☰) where Facebook sports several other lesser-used sections of the app.

The company says this is all part of Facebook's Journalism Project initiative, which Facebook launched shortly after last year's USA presidential election in which so-called fake news spread on the service, leading many to point to Facebook as part of the reason for Donald Trump's surprising victory.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is delving much deeper into the local news and events world with a new section in its mobile app.

This features is launched after the company has faced fake news issue.

Woman returns dead Christmas tree to Costco - in January
You bring it back where you bought it and get a refund, right? Costco is known for a lenient return policy , the paper reported. The post said the woman was questioned about the purchase and Costco employees made sure to verify the purchase on her account.

The Facebook Journalism Project was launched a year ago today, shortly after the United States presidential election, and it has already accomplished quite a lot.

It still remains to be seen that whether this section will benefit local publishers or not.

Even generating that extra traffic will depend on whether or not Facebook users frequent the new section.

Eventually, Facebook wants to roll this out to more cities.

The company is now testing the feature in 6 states of the US. These will include posts coming both from people as well as pages.
