Dead koala found screwed to pole in vile act of animal cruelty

"This poor koala has been screwed to the pole with building screws", they wrote in a Facebook post which has been shared more than 4,000 times.

A koala was the target of a shocking act of animal cruelty when it was found dead while screwed to a post of a picnic area gazebo in south-east Queensland yesterday.

Ray Chambers from Koala Rescue Queensland was one of the first at the scene, after his organisation received calls from both members of the public and a council gardener.

Appealing for witnesses to help the police as they investigate the incident in Brooloo Park, 85 miles north of Brisbane, KRQLD spokesman Murray Chambers said the violent act had taken advantage of a "vulnerable and innocent native animal".

RSPCA Australia was also unable to confirm whether the koala was alive when it was so cruelly nailed to the post.

Facebook user Jenalle Payne said the story brought tears to her eyes.

Ice cream bars recalled due to Listeria concerns
Fieldbrook Foods has suspended production and distribution of the products while it investigates the source of the contamination. Giant has recalled several products from its shelves because of possible Listeria contamination.

"Whether the animal was dead when it was put up there and it was put up there for some sort of sick joke we don't know, certainly the wildlife people are investigating that", he said.

"Police are now investigating the matter", Senior Sergeant Pierre Senekal, at nearby Kenilworth, told Reuters on Thursday.

He said it was "incredibly disturbing" and the offenders could be prosecuted.

Ray's twin brother Murray, a fellow rescuer, said he first heard about the koala through a woman who called anxious because she had seen blood near the animal, which she thought was still alive and clinging to the pole of its own volition.

He said it was unclear whether the koala was alive when it was attached to the post.

"I've been doing this job for 10 years and I've never seen anything like it".

"We're going to try to determine if there was trauma prior to his death, or find whatever happened".
