Coli outbreak in US: Likely source is leafy greens

U.S. Officials Not Ready to Blame E. coli Outbreak on Lettuce

According to the agency, there have been 42 cases of E. coli across the country as of Wednesday, including eight in Ontario.

Produce trade organizations issued a statement that, as of last week, no public health agency had contacted romaine lettuce growers or processors and asked to stop shipping product.

In an interview with NBC News, a CDC official said that even though Canadian authorities have linked the outbreak to romaine, USA food safety workers haven't been able to identify a single food consumed by everyone affected.

The FDA Commissioner tweeted a comment yesterday on the deadly E. coli O157:H7 HUS outbreak in the United States that may be linked to romaine lettuce. Seventeen people were hospitalized and one person died.

An E. coli outbreak has spread to 15 states, and health experts believe the infections are linked to contaminated leafy greens, Consumer Report noted. Public health officials identified new cases in Pennsylvania, California, Maryland, New Jersey and Indiana. Consumer Reports advised people to continue to avoid romaine lettuce.

It says there have been no reports on the onset of illness since December 12. The information about this outbreak has not been updated by government officials since December 28, 2017. The largest foodservice company, Compass Group, has already suspended using romaine lettuce in all operations until CDC provides more information, Halloran said. People usually get sick from E. coli O157:H7 three to four days after eating food contaminated with the germ. Some individuals may develop a severe illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, or HUS, which can be life-threatening, although most people recover in a few weeks.

Williams said Consumer Reports acted on its own to tell readers not to eat romaine after an interview with Connecticut Rep. Rosaw DeLauro, a Democrat who serves on a food safety subcommittee in the House and is concerned about the lack of response at the CDC.
