Firmino/Holgate Row Takes New Twist As Everton Defender Now Faces Ban

Mason Holgate has now been accused of posting homophobic tweets in 2012 and 2013

Holgate went on to delete his verified Twitter account soon after, but the questionable tweets had already been screengrabbed and widely distributed by multiple Liverpool fan accounts. In the exchanges Holgate used terms like "fag", "faggot" and "battyboy".

Referee Bobby Madley has filed a report to the FA which confirms the allegation but says the official did not witness the remarks being made.

But with English football's governing body in the process of collecting evidence relating to the allegation concerning Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino towards Holgate during last Friday's FA Cup third round tie, that case will be prioritised by the FA over Holgate's alleged tweets.

But Sportsmail understands that Madley stated in his report that he was unaware that Liverpool's Brazilian forward had used racist language, which could be significant as he was positioned between the two players at the time.

Daniel Sturridge could leave Liverpool in surprising January move
What's most worrying for Sturridge is the lack of interest now being shown in him in the January transfer window. Inter are considering signing Daniel Sturridge , according to Tuttosport .

Any charges brought on Holgate here will have no bearing on the Firmino incident, a decision on which is expected in the coming days. That translates as: "Are you insane, you son of a bitch?" Firmino's face is blocked by another player at one point, before the Everton defender reacts furiously.

Everton's academy product could be looking at a similar ban to Watford's Andre Gray after he was suspended from playing for four matches after sending homophobic tweets four years ago while playing for non-league Hinckley United.

The FA retains the power to take action against Holgate over his social media activity, despite the length of time since they were allegedly posted.
