One man died, and almost 100 were injured in the panic following the Iranian quake of magnitude 5.2, the France press reported. A total of 97 people were injured in Tehran, Alborz and in Savah, 110 km southwest of the capital.

The quake caused no major damage but tens of thousands of people spent the night outside for fear of aftershocks.

The report said Akhtar Abad village in suburban Tehran has sustained damage and one person was injured.

The epicentre of the tremor was located about 40 kilometres west of the capital.

Tehran and some other large cities have also been suffering from heavy smog and pollution in recent days.

Iran is on many major fault lines and is often hit by damaging earthquakes.

Last month, a 7.3-magnitude quake hit villages and towns in Iran's western Kermanshah province along the mountainous border with Iraq, killing 620 people and injuring thousands of others.

People started slowly returning to their homes again in the morning of December 21, the ISNA news agency reported.

Iran's Emergency Management Agency announced that in Tehran, Qom and Alborz provinces all centers of learning and many public services and other government offices will remain closed.

An Interior Ministry spokesperson appealed for calm on state television and said there was no need to panic.
