Storm Caroline upgraded to amber warning

Snow in Wollaton

But while the Met Office has issued amber weather warnings and a "threat to life" amid flying debris, many have poked fun at the storm damage - or lack thereof - in their area.

Council gritting teams are on standby to cover roads across the country, while train services have been suspended, cancelled or delayed, and ferry services faced disruption.

With a cold blast of weather and even snow showers forecast for later this week, Ireland will also have to bear the brunt of Storm Caroline that is expected to hit the United Kingdom in the coming days.

"There will be devastating winds in some parts". Broadly speaking we're looking at 2cm to 5cm, but in more exposed areas we could see 10cm to 20cm.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning - meaning that there is a "danger to life" - for parts of Wales, the Midlands and parts of northern England on Sunday.

The cold front moves in today and forecasters are predicting strong winds of up to 110km/h in some places, as well as up to 3cm of snow. Outside of the snow showers, there will be bright sunshine.

Scotland's transport minister, Humza Yousaf, said: "With stormy weather expected across the north of Scotland we would urge people to check with their operators before they travel, especially if they are planning a ferry journey".

The storm is now sweeping across the UK's northern-most regions.

CNR International said 69 of the 159 staff on Ninian South, about 240 miles from Aberdeen, would be leaving the structure as a precaution.

'There may also be bridge restrictions, particularly for high-sided vehicles, and we would urge road users to check the latest information on wind thresholds on the Traffic Scotland website to see where this is likely'.

As snow showers spread throughout the day, Storm Caroline is expected to get worse before it gets better.

Caroline is the third named storm of the 2017-18 winter season, after Aileen in September and Brian in October.

"The heaviest and most frequent snow showers will progressively become confined to north-east Scotland during Saturday".

A 73mph gust was recorded at Stornoway Airport while a 69mph gust was measured at Altnaharra in Sutherland and 68mph in South Uist on Thursday morning, the Met Office said.
